REPAIR AND REHABILITATION. WHILE, AS WE ALL DO PREPARE FOR THE EXCITEMENT FROM THE 50TH ALBUQUERQUE INTERNATIONAL BALLOON FIESTA, IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREPARE SAFETY WISE, TOO. AND WHILE ACCIDENTS ARE RARE DURING THIS EVENT ACROSS SASHA LENNINGER SHOWS HOW YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF OR EVEN SAVE A LIFE. IF YOU ENCOUNTER A BALLOON IN POWER LINES NEXT WEEKEND, OUR SKYLINE WILL BE FILLED WITH MORE THAN 600 HOT AIR BALLOONS REMINDING US ALL WHAT TO DO AND WHAT NOT TO DO. IF A BALLOON DOES HIT A POWER LINE, IT’S RARE, BUT IT HAPPENS. HOT AIR BALLOONS COLLIDING WITH POWER LINES, TOUCHING A BALLOON WRAPPED IN A POWER LINE COULD CAUSE A CHAIN REACTION THAT INJURES BOTH THOSE ATTEMPTING TO PROVIDE HELP, AS WELL AS EVERYONE WITHIN THE BALLOONS GONDOLA IN 2021. DURING BALLOON FIESTA. AT LEAST THREE HOT AIR BALLOONS RAN INTO POWER LINES. PNM HOSTING LOCAL FIRST RESPONDERS, TEACHING THEM THE DO’S AND THE DON’TS. OUR FIRST THOUGHT IS ALWAYS TO TRY AND HELP OUT IN A SITUATION, BUT IF YOU WERE TO CREATE A PATH TO GROUND WHICH THE HUMAN BODY IS VERY CONDUCTIVE, YOU WOULD YOU WOULD END UP GROUNDING THE POWER LINE THROUGH THE BALLOON, THE GONDOLA AND YOUR BODY AND NOT A GOOD IDEA. YOU CAN SEE HOW QUICKLY THINGS CATCH ON FIRE NO MATTER THE WEATHER. ANY LITTLE STRING OR ROLL OR RIBBON LIKE THAT CAN BE CONDUCTIVE IF YOU COME ACROSS A HOT AIR BALLOON OR DOWNED LINES, NEVER TOUCH THEM. ALWAYS ASSUME THAT A POWER LINE IS LIVE OR HAS POWER, EVEN IF IT’S ON THE GROUND, EVEN IF YOU CAN’T SEE IT SPARKING OR ASKING, JUST ALWAYS ASSUME THAT IT HAS POWER AND THEN IT CAN BE HARMFUL AND CALL 911 RIGHT AWAY. THE BEST THING THAT YOU CAN DO IS TO STAY STAY CLEAR OF THE AREA, KEEP EVERYBODY SAFE AND STAY CALM. Balloon Fiesta is a time when we see hundreds of balloons in the Albuquerque sky. While balloons fly, pilots need to be aware of powerlines in the area in order to stay safe. Although these types of incidents are rare, PNM wants to remind everyone what to do if a balloon comes into contact with a powerline. If you see a balloon contact a powerline, do not approach the balloon. You should call 911 immediately. Touching a balloon that is tangled in powerlines can injure anyone who is trying to help and could injure those who are inside of the balloon’s gondola. Electricity seeks the nearest path to the ground. A balloon hanging on an energized powerline could become deadly if someone touches the balloon or tether while also standing on the ground. PNM says if you do see a balloon contact powerlines, call 911 immediately.
