Driving instructor jailed after stalking 19-year-old university student | UK | News

Carrying craft knife blades Mansie, 53, drove from Beckenham, Kent, to York where Maisie, 19, is studying psychology. A friend of Maisie spotted him at 11.20pm under a tree outside their campus accommodation and alerted university security who called the police.

Officers found him sobbing before realising he had attempted to slash his wrists, causing superficial wounds.

The incident on May 27 came just nine days after magistrates in Bromley, Kent, handed the driving instructor a two-month jail sentence, suspended for a year, for stalking her.

The defendant had become “infatuated” with the teen when he was teaching her to drive, the judge said.

Mansie had set up social media accounts about her and joined a WhatsApp group for her Halls of Residence in York and even drove to the campus in October last year.

He was arrested and charged with stalking, for which he was handed the suspended sentence in May, but ignored the restraining order and went to York the next week.

Mansie pleaded guilty to breaching the order and possessing a blade.

Yesterday Judge Simon Hickey jailed him for 20 months at York Crown Court and imposed an indefinite restraining order, warning him the sentence for any future breach would be measured in years, not months.

Maisie said the stress of being stalked has led to her severe anorexia.

She added: “I think about what has happened every day, constantly paranoid about what could happen.

“I thought things could not get any worse. However, when Mr Mansie breaks a legal order just nine days after sentencing, it leaves me to question if this will ever end.”

She added: “I am now a 19-year-old battling a severe mental illness and having to live with a 53-year-old stalker, whilst trying to get a degree.”
