‘We’ve missed him’: Voss buoyed by boost for finals push

McGovern was thriving in a new intercepting role down back before another hamstring setback that required surgery, but is back to boost a Blues defence that has been understrength for most of the season. His return helps somewhat offset midfielder George Hewett (back soreness) being unavailable.Michael Voss’ team is as good as certain to end its finals drought this year – being two games clear of the ninth-placed Bulldogs with five rounds to go – but is fresh from a five-goal defeat from pacesetter Geelong.SCROLL DOWN TO SEE EVERY ROUND 19 TEAM “It is good (to regain McGovern). It’s been a long time and we’ve missed him,” Voss said.“He was obviously a pretty important member to our team early this season and it was a bit unfortunate that he had that setback.“But to get him back, from a personnel point of view – we’ve obviously lost a few along the way – is a real bonus for us at this time of the year.”Voss also dismissed any idea Carlton might have of easing the former Crow back into AFL action, saying that was the purpose of his VFL tune-up.“He got through so well and he’s had a great block of training now. We’ve been able to get a quality five or six weeks under his belt and he’s got plenty of load,” he said.“So I guess the last box he needed to tick was to play in the VFL and he was always probably going to come straight back into the side when he was available.“It’s one thing to integrate people back into your team, but when they’ve been missing for a long time, those relationships and that connection that they have, and they build with their other defenders, is really important.“So this gives us the opportunity to be able to do that. We’ve obviously got some pretty important games (coming up), so it’s timely that he returns.”The Cats loss was a sharp reminder that the Blues still have work to do if they are to not only qualify for September but have an impact at that time of the year. They will face Adelaide after the Giants before three-straight matches against likely finalists Brisbane, Melbourne and Collingwood leading into the finals.“I think when you play against a mature football team, like what (Geelong) are; they ask questions of every part of your system,” Voss said.“I’d like to be able to sit here and say there was one particular thing that we take away, but the reality is that they demand your system to be right on for four quarters.“I couldn’t count how many times we’ve actually sat in the review and looked at us and what we need to do to get better and that’s where we feel like we’re continually evolving.“The full version of us is going to happen over a long period of time, not just this year. We still feel like we’ve got so much growth within us.” TEAMS WRAP: BLUES ROCKED BY MIDFIELD BLOW Carlton’s midfield has suffered a blow ahead of an important clash with GWS. The Blues have lost tough on-baller George Hewett to injury as they try to move a step closer to sealing a top-eight berth on Sunday. Hewett and suspended wingman Will Hayes are out of the team which lost to Geelong last weekend, with Mitch McGovern, Lochie O’Brien, Will Setterfield, Lachie Fogarty and Paddy Dow named in an extended Blues squad. Collingwood has included Isaac Quaynor, Taylor Adams and Tyler Brown for its match against Essendon, while the Bombers have added Massimo D’Ambrosio, James Stewart and Alex Waterman to their squad. Zak Jones has paid the price for St Kilda’s poor outing against Western Bulldogs, axed for Sunday’s match against the Eagles. The Saints have recalled six players for its must-win trip west, while stars Aaron Naughton and Clayton Oliver return for the blockbuster Melbourne-Bulldogs clash. Richmond has dropped Josh Gibcus and Jake Aarts and brought back Ivan Soldo to beef up its ruck stocks for a clash with Dockers big man Sean Darcy. Hawthorn will get Jack Gunston back for its clash against North Melbourne in Hobart.Gunston has missed the past fortnight after the passing of his father Ray.Brisbane will be boosted by the return of five key Lions for the Q Clash against Gold Coast. The Lions regain captain Dayne Zorko, as well as defenders Daniel Rich and Marcus Adams, wingman Jarrod Berry and ruckman Oscar McInerney.Gold Coast have made four changes of its own.No. 7 draft pick Elijah Hollands will make his debut for the Suns with Brayden Fiorini, Jack Bowes and Oleg Markov all omitted. Richmond kicks off the round with its top-eight spot on the line against Fremantle, while Port Adelaide needs a boilover against Geelong to stay in the finals race. Gold Coast faces a similar scenario in Saturday night’s QClash, while the Western Bulldogs could stake a claim with victory against reigning premier Melbourne. Wins for Carlton and Collingwood on Sunday will further cement the fierce rivals in the top-seven spots on the ladder, before St Kilda heads west in desperate need of a win. Defender Jake Lever will be assessed on Friday after being cleared of structural damage to his shoulder, but Demons coach Simon Goodwin is positive he will also play. Goodwin revealed key forward Ben Brown would have to manage a knee issue for the rest of his career, having been put on light duties at training this week, but he is also likely to take on the Dogs. Oliver had a plate and pins inserted in his thumb and will miss just one match. Goodwin said the surgery would ensure the star onballer gets through the rest of 2022. In the end I think the freshen up for him last week is going to do him well. “He’s done an incredible job to get himself right. He’s been in my office a fair bit the last four or five days telling me he’s ready to go.”
